All eyes will be on Quarry Oaks Golf Course this week as 64 competitors will battle for the Diamond Athletic Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship.
Originally scheduled for Gilbert Plains Country Club, Tuesday will be a big day in the 54 hole event with two rounds on the docket starting at 7:00am. The final round will tee off at the same time Wednesday morning.
“Anytime you can welcome the best players in the province to Quarry Oaks, it’s a great opportunity for our course and our community” said PGA of Manitoba Head Professional Ian Penner. “Our team was excited to step in when the opportunity presented itself and help out.”
“Three rounds here will really test every part of a player’s game. The Front Oak 9 is definitely the side where players will look to score and make a few birdies, but once they make the turn to the Desert 9, the course becomes much more demanding with likely the toughest hole being the finishing hole.” added Penner. “Golfers will need to stay patient, make smart decisions, and take advantage of the opportunities they get because the back nine has a way of testing you if you get out of position.”
Dating back to 1993, two time defending champion Allan McDonald (Breezy Bend Country Club) looks to become the first player to win this championship in three consecutive years. Breezy Bend legend Garth Collings won the Men’s Mid-Amateur crown seven times (2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2010 and 2012).
29 players, including defending champion Curtis Markusson (St. Charles Country Club), will also be competing for the Mid-Masters Championship. This is for those who are 40 years of age and older.
