Fredborg finishes as Top Manitoban, Springer wins Manitoba Open

Hayden Springer of Texas birdied five of the last six holes to earn a three stroke victory over Quebec’s Etienne Papineau at the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open.

Springer’s final round of 6-under par 66 at Southwood Golf & Country Club ended his tournament atop of the leaderboard at 21-under par.

Travis Fredborg (Pine Ridge Golf Club) shot a 1-under par 71. The Selkirk product made five birdies, nine pars and four bogeys finishing in a tie for 49th place at 3-under par.

WATCH & RESULTS | Round 2 of the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open

Travis Fredborg (Pine Ridge Golf Club) was the lone Manitoban to make the cut through two rounds of the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open at Southwood Golf & Country Club.

Fredborg birdied the 18th hole to complete his second round at 1-under par 71, good for a 3-under tournament total and a tie for 39th overall on the leaderboard.

Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Champion Braxton Kuntz (Breezy Bend Country Club) shot even par 72 to miss the cut by two strokes.

Ryan McMillan (Elmhurst Golf & Country Club) bettered his opening round by three strokes carding a 74 in his first professional tournament.

Winnipeg Jets forward Morgan Barron finished two rounds of play at +22 (80-86).

WATCH | Fredborg & Barron at the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open

It may have been delayed 90 minutes this morning, but after the fog lifted some of the world’s best up and coming golfers opened the 2023 CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open at Southwood Golf & Country Club.

Three Manitobans, Travis Fredborg (Pine Ridge Golf Club), Braxton Kuntz (Breezy Bend Country Club) and Ryan McMillan (Elmhurst Golf & Country Club) along with Winnipeg Jets forward Morgan Barron, are in this year’s field.

Fredborg made consecutive birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes on his way to a 2-under par 70.

Kuntz completed his opening round Friday morning playing the final three holes. He shot a 1-under par 71.

McMillan, in his first professional event, carded a 5-over par 77 while Barron had an 8-over par 80.

WATCH & RESULTS | Abgrall, Kuntz & Scheifele after 2nd round of CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open

Winnipeg’s Braxton Kuntz shot a 3 under 69 Saturday during his second round of the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open.

With a two round total of 4 under par 140, Kuntz missed the cut by one stroke at Southwood Golf & Country Club.

Southwood member Colwyn Abgrall shot a 1 over par 73 to finish 36 holes of play at 3 over par 147.

Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele, playing as a Sponsor’s Exemption, shot an 84 in his second round to finish at 162.

Parker Coody of Texas shot a 10 under par 62. With a 17 under par total, he enters Sunday’s third round with a five stroke lead.

Manitoba Open call for volunteers

Calling all golfers!

It’s official…the Players Cup goes back to its roots and is once again known as The Manitoba Open! This event has raised significant amounts over the years for various charities in our community, and this year, The Manitoba Open organizing committee excited to announce that True North Youth Foundation (TNYF) will be its new charitable partner.  The 2022 event is taking place at Southwood Golf and Country Club August 15-21, 2022, and volunteer positions in scoring, marshaling, hospitality, standard bearing and distance measuring are just some of the ways you can get involved.

Your participation as a volunteer will directly support TNYF because all net proceeds from the $39.00 volunteer registration fee (free registration for volunteers 18 and under) will be donated to that important charitable partner.  Your registration fee also entitles you to a Manitoba Open logo’d uniform (shirt/hat combo with retail value of $75) plus a minimum of one daily breakfast or lunch buffet during your volunteer shift (retail value $20 per day). Charity, merchandise and great food, not to mention the “inside the ropes” experience at a first class golf tournament, is a combination that is hard to beat!
