Championship Schedule Inside Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship

Match Play Qualifier & Championship Matches moved to August

Golf Manitoba, in association with the Grand Pines Golf Course, announced today the 2021 Match Play Qualifier will be moved to Sunday, August 22nd followed by the Match Play Championship being played Monday, August 23rd to Thursday, August 26th.

“Due to the current health conditions in our province and the overwhelming interest by the number of golfers who want to play in our event, we are delaying until it is safe to do so” said Golf Manitoba Executive Director Jared Ladobruk.

“We are excited to host this great event at our course, however we agree that a date later in this season is a better alternative at this time.  Our course is in tremendous shape already and welcome everyone to play here this season” added Grand Pines Golf Course General Manager and Head Professional Ivan Koop.

Golf Manitoba will continue to evaluate provincial health and travel restrictions related to COVID-19 to make informed and responsible decisions related to our 2021 championship schedule.

The safety and well-being of our championship competitors, tournament staff and volunteers along with corporate partners and our host community at large is paramount to Golf Manitoba.

Amateur Match Play Championship

Uhl, Lechman and Dobrescu take Match Play Titles

The 2020 Match Play Championship concluded on Sunday, June 21 at the historic St. Charles Country Club.  After a cool and cloudy day, the skies opened up just enough for the trophy presentation for the first official event on the Golf Manitoba championship schedule.

In the amateur women’s division final, it was a rematch from the 2019 final with Bobbi Uhl of Shilo Country Club taking on Hannah Diamond of St. Charles Country Club. It was Uhl’s turn to hoist the trophy with a 5 & 4 win preventing Diamond from taking her third straight match play championship. It was the first match play victory for Uhl who plays collegiate golf for Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.

In the senior men’s division, Southwood Golf & Country Club’s Gordon Hudson squared off against Carl Lechman of Elmhurst in the 18-hole final. Lechman had his irons dialed in all day defeating Hudson on the 13th hole for a 6 & 5 victory. It was the first senior match play title for Lechman who also won the amateur men’s division back in 1990.

On the amateur men’s side, Austin Dobrescu, the number 2 seed heading into the championship matches, faced off against number 17 seed Jack Werhun of the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club. After a back-and-forth match, Dobrescu closed out the day on the 34th hole with a 4 & 2 victory good for his second straight match play title.

Austin Dobrescu finishes T31st in Canadian Men’s Amateur

Tsawwassen, BC – 03 August 2018 – Canadian Junior Girls Championship at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, BC. (Chuck Russell/Golf Canada)

Austin Dobrescu of Shilo Country Club continued his hot play this season with a T31 finish at the Golf Canada Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship that was played August 5-8 at the Glen Arbour Golf Course and The Links at Brunello in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. Dobrescu, a member of Team Manitoba that finished 5th in the Willingdon Cup inter-provincial team championship, was the lone Manitoban to make the cut in this year’s event shooting rounds of 76-74-72-71 for a 293 total. Equally impressive in his feat, Dobrescu was in a tie for 11th for Canadians who made the cut in what has now become a top international event on the world amateur golf circuit.

Adding to his impressive finish at the Canadian Amateur, Dobrescu, who plays collegiate golf for the Chicago State NCAA Division I Cougars, started the season with a win at the Golf Manitoba Match Play Championship, finished T3rd in the Elmhurst Invitational and had a runner-up finish in the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship.

Upon his return to Manitoba, Dobrescu will have little time to rest as he was recently awarded a sponsor’s exemption into the 2019 Players Cup, the local stop on the PGA Tour Canada Mackenzie Tour, that will take place August 12-18 at the Southwood Golf & Country Club.
