Derrik Goodwin of St. Charles Country Club needed a playoff but ended the day Tuesday at Larters at St. Andrews winning the PGA of Manitoba TaylorMade adidas Fall Championship with a two day total 137 (70-68).

Colwyn Abgrall of GolfTEC also finished 36 holes at 137 (69-69), however came up short on the extra hole needed to decide the event.

Jason Ludke of Pine Ridge Golf Club finished in third place just three strokes back at 140 (69-71)

Only a few matches in the Senior Men’s and Men’s Division ended prior to heavy rains, thunder and lightning that stopped play in the Manitoba Match Play Championship at the Grand Pines Golf Course.

Matches will resume at 7:00 Wednesday morning. The second round of Senior Men’s play will get right back on the course beginning at 9am.

One match that did conclude in the Senior Men’s Division was #1 seed Lorne Duncan of Niakwa Country Club winning 7&6 over Manitoba Public Players Club member Craeg Parker.

Low qualifier and number one seed Noel Ngo of Pine Ridge Golf Club earned a 4&2 victory over Jeremy Kehler of Quarry Oaks Golf Course in his opening match of Men’s Division play in the Manitoba Match Play Championship at Grand Pines Golf Course. The win now pits Ngo against #16 Nicholas Welch of Niakwa Country Club on Tuesday.

The top eight seeds following Sunday’s qualifier also won their opening matches.

Another match drawing a lot of attention was 14 year old Payne Wood of St. Boniface Golf Club beating Trent Robertson of Niakwa on the 18th hole. Wood is the youngest competitor in this year’s field.

The Senior Men’s Division open their 16 matches Tuesday afternoon starting at 2:00. The second round of Men’s Division play will follow.

Noel Ngo of Pine Ridge Golf Club was the only player Sunday to break par with a two under 70 at Grand Pines Golf Club and will be the top seed starting Monday in the 48th Manitoba Match Play Championship.

Ngo’s back nine scorecard included three birdies for a 33.

Connor Stewart of Niakwa Country Club is the number two seed after firing a one over par 73.

Rounding out the top five are Lyle Mackenzie in third, also of Niakwa at 74, Brent Ingram of Elmhurst Golf & Country Club (75) and Curtis Markusson of St. Charles Country Club (75) fourth and fifth respectively.

43 players were vying for 32 spots in the Men’s bracket that saw the cut line set at 85.

Addison Kartusch of St. Charles is the low women’s qualifier and top seed following her five over par 77. She finished three strokes better than Golf Manitoba Public Players Club member Veronica van der Meer. Marissa Naylor of Niakwa (81) and St. Charles’ Hannah Diamond (82) round out the top four Women’s seeds.

Lorne Duncan of Niakwa birdied the 15th and 16th holes during his round and is the low Senior Men’s qualifier following a two over par 74.

Rob Oliphant of Rossmere Country Club (75), Gord Kroeker of Pine Ridge (75), Dwayne Heinrichs of Bel Acres Golf & Country Club (76) and Golf Manitoba Public Player David Klowak (77) round out the top five seeds.

89 players start teeing off Sunday morning at 8:00 in hopes of competing in the 48th Manitoba Match Play Championship Monday through Thursday at Grand Pines Golf Club.

The Low 32 amateur male players, low 32 senior male players and low 8 amateur female players after 18 holes will stave off elimination advancing to the Championship competition.

Looking back at last year’s event at St. Charles Country Club, Austin Dobrescu of Shilo Country Club won the Men’s Championship 4 & 2 over Jack Werhun of the Elmhurst Golf & Country Club, Bobbi Uhl of Shilo needed 14 holes to win the ladies crown over Hannah Diamond of the host course and Elmhurst’s Carl Lechman won the senior men’s championship on the 13th hole against Gord Hudson of Southwood Golf & Country Club.

Golf Manitoba Director of Communications Brian Munz takes us “Inside the Ropes” with TSN hockey broadcaster Dennis Beyak.

Beyak shares how he fell in love with the game of golf, some of his favorite golf stories and a few of the courses he has been fortunate enough to play.

Winnipeg’s Noah Fiks shot a four under par 67 in his final round at the Carman Golf & Curling Club to earn a four stroke victory over Trey Ross, also of Winnipeg, in the 36 hole Maple Leaf Junior Tour Manitoba Series.

Fiks’ 67, which earned him the Junior Boys title with a two day total 140, was the lowest single day score of any golfer in the six divisions of competition.

12 year old Teerawut Boonseeor of Thailand had an impressive showing with two days of play at 73,68 to win the Pee Wee Boys division.

Jack Taylor of Winnipeg won the Juvenile Boys division at 145 (72-73), two strokes better than Ryan Orchard of the host course (73,74).

Brayden Boge of Winnipeg at 145 (72,73) claims the Bantam Boys crown by six strokes over Jackson Delaurier of Dauphin (74,77).

Crystal Zamzow of Swan River was the top golfer in the 15-19 girls division at 151 (72,79) while Addison Kartusch won the U15 girls division with a two day total 167 (83,84).

Thomas Scott of Dauphin shot a three under par 68 and has a four stroke lead over Winnipeg’s Trey Ross heading into today’s final round of the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s Manitoba Series 36 hole tournament at the Carman Golf and Curling Club.

Scott’s round, to lead the Junior Boys Division, was the best score posted in any of the six divisions.

Jack Taylor of Winnipeg opened with a 72 to lead the Juvenile Boys Division by one stroke over Carman’s Ryan Orchard.

Brayden Boge of Winnipeg, who shot a 72, has a two stroke lead over Jackson Delaurier of Dauphin in Bantam Boys.

In Pee Wee Boys, a 73 by Teerawut Boonseeor of Thailand is good for a five stroke advantage over Hudson Hunnie of Winnipeg.

Crystal Zamzow of Swan River has a 10 stroke lead over Clara Peake of Binscarth after carding a 72 in Girls 15-19 play.

Addison Kartusch of Winnipeg opened with an 83 in the U15 Girls Division. She is eight stroke ahead of Jeri Lafleche, also of Winnipeg.

The Carman Golf & Curling Club and Niakwa Country Club own bragging rights for 2021 following today’s 18 hole Senior Men’s Interclub Championship at the Minnedosa Golf & Country Club.

Carman wins the Rural Division championship with the best three person combined score of 224, finishing 11 strokes better than the Clear Lake Golf Course.

Individually, leading the way was Bruce North with a one over par 73. Bill North followed with a 75, Wayne Giesbrecht 76 and Lionel Walz 88.

The team of Lorne Duncan, Darryl Buhr, Doug Lavallee and Ken Warwick led Niakwa to a five stroke victory in the City Division over the Southwood Golf and Country Club.

Duncan made five birdies on the day shooting a two under par 70, Buhr and Lavallee both had a 75 while Warwick finished at 80.

Duncan was the only competitor in the 63 person field to record a score under par.

64 competitors representing 16 golf courses from across Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario are at the Minnedosa Golf & Country Club today for the Senior Men’s Interclub Championship.

The best three scores from each golf course represented will be combined to decide the 2021 champion.

Last year at Grand Pines Golf Course, individually Ron Bilawka of Pine Ridge had the low round of the day at three under par 69 finishing two strokes better than Mike Walker of St. Boniface.

On a count back, Breezy Bend Country Club won the City Division championship over Pine Ridge Golf Club with both clubs finishing tied atop the standings at 229.

Clear Lake Golf Course won the Rural Division championship by five strokes over the host course.
