The 2022 Golf Manitoba Awards reception will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2022, at the Breezy Bend Country Club. The annual Golf Manitoba Awards event recognizes and celebrates all that’s great about the sport of golf in the province – from volunteers to elite performers, teams and milestone achievements including the annual male and female Amateur Golfer of the Year awards.

The Golf Manitoba Annual General Meeting will also be held on November 2 and just prior to the start of the Awards event. Under Golf Manitoba by-laws, notice of the annual meeting has been sent to all member clubs and leagues via email and to the attention of the Club President & Member Club Representative. All member clubs are invited to RSVP one voting delegate to attend the meeting and to vote on behalf of the club/league.

Winnipeg’s Kristian Hammerback, a Golf Manitoba Public Players Club member, finished 8th on the leaderboard at the Canadian All Abilities Championship this week in Essex, Ontario.

Over 36 holes at the Essex Golf & Country Club, Hammerback shot 80 and 81 to finished at +19, 161.

Kurtis Barkley of Ontario won the Men’s Gross Stroke Play Championship at 4 under par 138.

In the Net Stableford division, Hammerback tied for fifth place with 70 points, only five back of Ontario’s Kevin Delaney.

Back in Winnipeg following his Canadian Men’s Mid-Master Championship, St. Charles Country Club member Curtis Markusson chats with Golf Manitoba Director of Communications Brian Munz about his national championship and the 2022 Golf Manitoba season.

St. Charles Country Club members Grady Chuback and Addison Kartusch are back home following Golf Canada’s 2022 Team Canada – Next Gen Selection Camp.

Both players are members of the Team Manitoba junior development program.

Chuback finished T9 on the Junior Boys leaderboard after 54 holes of play at +3, 219 (73-72-74) at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario.

Kartusch placed 26th in the Junior Girls event at +22, 238 (80-81-77).

The objective of Team Canada – NextGen is to provide resources and support to help developing Canadian junior and young amateur golfers maximize their potential and eventually reach the LPGA or PGA TOUR.

Golf Canada’s selection committee will now use the results from the camp assessments along with supplementary information (including other 2022 results) to select players to for the 2022/23 Team Canada NextGen Squad.

Winnipeg’s Jay Doyle shot a final round of 1 over par 73 to finish four days of play at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship tied for seventh place on the leaderboard at 297.

The Niakwa Country Club member’s final round included two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars.

Hodson Financial Men’s Senior Champion Rob Oliphant of Rossmere Country Club ended play with an 87 and 316 tournament total.

As the saying goes, there’s power in momentum. It’s a saying that Rusty Strawn knows all too well after securing back-to-back victories this September at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in Marion, Mass., and the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, presented by BDO in Red Deer, Alta. Nine days separated the two wins. Needless to say, the McDonough, Ga. resident is going to need a bigger trophy case.

Heading into the final round at Red Deer Golf and Country Club, the 59-year-old shared the lead with fellow American, Mike Lohner of Southlake, Tex. The pair went back and forth throughout the day, both beginning their round at 5-under-par. It wasn’t until the back nine when Strawn hit a groove, birdieing three of his last eight holes to pull away from the pack to secure the 60^th Canadian Men’s Senior Championship title.

“I was very fortunate last week to win the United States Senior Amateur,” said Strawn. “And of course, by doing it I got the exemption to the United States Mid-Amateur, and I told the people at the USGA, I said, there is no way I’m going to miss the Canadian Men’s Senior. I absolutely love it here.”

To celebrate, Strawn popped a bottle of champagne and toasted the volunteers, Red Deer Golf and Country Club staff, and fellow competitors “To my new Canadian friends!”. He also commented, “having my picture taken with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the coolest picture I’ve ever taken.”

Strawn was also highly complimentary of the host club.

“It’s just been a wonderful week here in Red Deer,” said Strawn. “When I arrived here for my practice round on Sunday – probably the strength of my game is my putting – and when I rolled those first few putts on the practice green, I was like, I have nobody but myself to blame because they were absolutely awesome.”

Low Canadian Ken Griffith, who is a member at Red Deer Golf and Country Club, placed third on the leaderboard, carding a total score of 288, his best finish ever at the national championship.  Fellow members, Grant Lee and Peter Innes also competed in the tournament and finished T7 and T15, respectively.

Frank Van Dornick ran away with the Super Senior division securing the title and the Governor’s Cup by 10 strokes.

Earlier in the week, host club Team Alberta won the 36-hole inter-provincial team competition in an impressive 11-stroke victory over runner-up Team British Columbia. Ken Griffith (Red Deer Golf & Country Club), Senan Foley (Public Player – Alberta), and Kelly Risling (Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club) shot a collective one-under to give Team Alberta the back-to-back victory as they defended their 2019 title and claimed the Phil Farley Memorial Trophy.

The Clear Lake Ladies Golf Club celebrated its 75th year on August 31, 2022. The group recognized its diamond anniversary with a luncheon at the NINE Restaurant at the Clear Lake Golf Course.

The Wasagaming Ladies Golf Club was first formed in 1947 thanks to the vision of Helen Hickling, a practicing Winnipeg lawyer and Clear Lake cottage owner, who decided to compete in the Manitoba Championships tournament in Winnipeg.  Helen approached the first superintendent of Riding Mountain National Park, Mr. Hislop, to ask for permission to join the Manitoba Ladies Golf Association so that she could compete in the tournament.  Permission was granted, Helen competed and subsequently became the first president of the club. 

At the 1995 spring meeting, The Wasagaming Ladies Club changed its name to the Clear Lake Ladies Golf Club.  The late 90s also saw the formation of the Fall Classic Tournament which had a very successful run for many years thanks to the efforts of several dedicated members.  The membership currently sits at thirty-five players and one associate member.  The Club has active members in their nineties continuing to enjoy coming out to play.  Once a week, members take turns hosting a “social” at their cottage after a scheduled weekly game and for many members, this is a definite perk of belonging to the club. 

Competitive golfers within the club included Muriel Clark, Geri Ferris, Betty Hall, Helen Hickling, The Lawrence sisters ( Donna, Heather and Marion), Donna Lawson, Joan Kullberg,  Lynn MacDonald, Bea Matheson, Ann McDiarmid, Mabel Mitchell, and  Marg Patrick.  Notable junior members, Stacey Bieber and Kaitlin Troop, made their mark with impressive tournament play in Manitoba, Canada and the US.

The Clear Lake Ladies Club is proud to celebrate seventy-five years of memorable moments celebrating golf, women and good times that have defined the club’s past and will shape its future.

Clear skies over Red Deer Golf and Country Club set the stage for a picturesque day in Red Deer, Alta. as the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, presented by BDO, wrapped up its third day of play in the Energy Province.

For the third consecutive day, Mike Lohner continues to hold prime real estate at the top of the leaderboard, firing even par 72 to share the lead with fellow countryman Rusty Strawn. A resident of Southlake, Tex., Lohner finished second in the Carlton Woods Invitational earlier this year and is in the hunt for his first victory north of the border.

Strawn finished the first round tied for the top spot with Lohner, but dipped down to second place after navigating three bogeys during yesterday’s second round. After a steady performance today where the McDonough, Ga. resident made birdie on five holes, Strawn holds a share of the lead once again and will look to keep the momentum going after securing a victory at the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship last week.

Niakwa Country Club’s Jay Doyle shot a 4 over par 76 to sit T9 on the leaderboard at 224.

Rob Oliphant of Rossmere Country Club had a strong finish to his third round making four birdies on the back nine carding a 74. The Hodson Financial Men’s Senior Champion is T31 at 229.

Friday promises to be an exciting battle of top amateur talent with an exemption into the 2023 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship on the line. Not only will the winner etch their name into the historic John Rankin Memorial Trophy, but also into Canadian golf history as the field of 156 top senior golfers comes down to one champion.

Addison Kartusch and Grady Chuback, both of St. Charles Country Club and both members of the Team Manitoba junior development program, have been chosen to attend Golf Canada’s 2022 Team Canada – NextGen Selection Camp that will be held September 8-11, 2022 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario.

Kartusch had a very busy and successful 2022 competitive campaign winning the 2022 Manitoba Junior Girls Championship and placing 30th in the Canadian Junior Girls Championship. Chuback finished 2nd in the Manitoba Junior Boys Championship to earn a spot to represent Manitoba at the 2022 Canadian Junior Boys Championship. Both players also represented Manitoba in the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

The Selection Camp will include a 54-hole head-to-head tournament and a small portion of objective skills testing. On the girl’s side, the 54-hole competition (September 9-11) will also serve as a final qualifier for the World Junior Girls Championship to be held from October 12-15 at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, ON. Following the camp, Golf Canada’s selection committee will use the results from the camp assessments along with supplementary information (including other 2022 results) to select players to for the 2022/23 Team Canada NextGen Squad.

Canadian Brooke Henderson joins American star Lexi Thompson and New Zealand’s Lydia Ko as the franchise-first female pros in the PGA TOUR 2K23 video game.

Other pros available in the game include cover athlete Tiger Woods, Will Zalatoris, Jon Rahm, Tony Finau, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas, who graced the 2K21 cover.

Henderson, a 24-year-old from Smiths Falls, Ont., has won US$10.4 million in career earnings and currently ranks fifth in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. Ko is No. 4 and Thompson No. 7.

Also featured in the game is St. George’s Golf and Country Club, host of the 2022 RBC Canadian Open.

The video game is developed by HB Studios in Lunenburg N.S., for 2K Sports.

The deluxe version of the game is scheduled for release on Oct. 11 with the standard edition to follow Oct. 14.

A round of even par 72 during the second round of the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship in Red Deer, Alberta has Jay Doyle of Niakwa Country Club T10 on the leaderboard.

Doyle carded five birdies and sits with a tournament total 4 over par 148.

Rob Oliphant of Rossmere Country Club shaved five strokes off his opening round and sits T51 (80-75-155) to make the cut by one stroke.
