Golf Manitoba well represented at Canadian Women’s Senior Championship

One hundred and thirty-one of Canada’s top senior-aged golfers will descend on Mill River Golf Resort for the playing of the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship, presented by BDO.
The Canadian Women’s Senior Championship will consist of 54 holes of stroke-play with a cut after 36 holes. Players over 50 are eligible to compete in the Senior Championship and those 60 and over will compete for the Super Senior title.
After 36 holes the field will be reduced to the low 70 players and ties, based off the Senior division. A minimum of five Super Seniors will make the cut and anyone within ten shorts of the Super Senior leader.
Representing Golf Manitoba are Lisa Benson (St. Charles Country Club), Tammy Gibson (Niakwa Country Club), Rhonda Orr (Southwood Golf & Country Club), Heather Shayna (Southwood), Mary Turner (Golf Manitoba Public Players Club) and Susan Wright-Cassan (Emerald Greens Golf Club).

An event previously combined with the Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur competition, the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship will be conducted as a stand-alone championship.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Mill River Resort as a stand-alone event for the first time in recent history,” said Golf Canada Tournament Director Daniel Suppa. We are excited to have competitors from Canada and the United States showcase their skills at a great venue here in Atlantic Canada. Golf Canada’s Amateur Championships and more specifically, the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship wouldn’t be possible without the support of the host club committee, volunteers, and national partners.”
Shelly Stouffer of Nanoose Bay, BC., won last year’s Senior Division by one stroke over Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont., who won the Super Senior Division. Stouffer and Samuel will return this year to try and defend their titles. Also competing is two-time winner Judith Kyrinis of Thornhill, Ont., fresh off a T6 finish at last week’s USGA Senior Open Championship.
Constructed between 1969-1970 under the direction of Robbie Robinson, the well-established Mill River Golf Resort features 18 unforgettable holes that cater to both high and low handicap players. Its expansive, rolling fairways, bunkered greens and water elements combine to present a premier championship experience. Between 1992-1996, Graham Cooke designed multiple changes to the course including six new greens at holes 2,3,4,5,6, and 17.
“Hosting a National Championship is something that doesn’t happen very often, so we are very excited to have the opportunity to work with Golf Canada,” said Sean Joyce, Director of Golf at Mill River. “Mill River is proud to have the best players from across the country here in our corner of the province enjoying our resort and golf course, we wish them all the best this week.”
An inter-provincial team championship will be played in conjunction with the first 36 holes of the competition, with three-player teams vying for the inter-provincial title. Team British Columbia including Shelly Stouffer, Jackie Little, and Sandra Turbide won last year’s title.
Conducted since 1971, the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship has featured the country’s most accomplished senior golfers including Canadian Golf Hall of Fame members Marlene Streit, Gayle Borthwick, Marilyn O’Connor and Margaret Todd who all own senior championship titles.
The champion of the 2023 Canadian Women’s Senior Competition will earn exemptions into the 2023 U.S Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, 2024 Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, 2024 Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship and the 2024 U.S Women’s Senior Open.

INSIDE THE ROPES – Rhonda Orr at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open

Golf Manitoba is pleased to share the unique experience of Southwood Golf & Country Club member Rhonda Orr as she participates this week in the 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Open at Waverley Country Club in Portland, Oregon.
With a 2:34 tee time, the final one of the day the morning was spent watching the leaderboard and resting as the hot weather and excitement was starting to catch up with me. The range was quite busy again with the morning wave putting in post game practice and the afternoon wave preparing for their round.

Along with Joanne Carner we were the last on the putting green before making the long walk to our 10th tee start.
It was special to have my son Brendan caddie for me this week.

My round started our with a double followed by a near miss for a hole in one. Apparently that excitement got to me as I followed up that birdie with some big scores.

What I will choose to remember about the golf is that I had a numerous birdie chances, 6 straight pars to finish the tournament and on few holes I scored better than Annika.

Although it was not the ending I had scripted for myself I am grateful for each and every minute of this week and that my family was there to experience it with me.
Thanks for following along, I hope you enjoyed it!

Wednesday – Last day of preparation and you can see and feel the change of intensity. The players parking lot was full, the driving range was 2 deep, putting green was filled with mirrors and alignment aids. All much different than Monday and Tuesday. In the dining room people were in and out quicker and the discussions a little less jovial.

My day started with short game work followed by some time on the putting green where I met Julie Inkster. A quick lunch where I was able to sit at a table with Annika and her husband Mike. Some would find that intimidating but it was nothing compared to hitting balls 2 positions away from her on the range and watching in awe.

On and around the course you notice the addition of concession stands, security at the entrances, and electronic leaderboards.
They are expecting very hot weather so to keep the greens alive they are watering between the morning and afternoon waves. Even with that weather the course seems lush and green.

Thursday – As I walked to the first tee from the putting green I thought wow this is really happening! Marshalls with quiet signs, concession stand selling pizza, fans waiting to see you tee off, getting introduced as Rhonda Orr, Canada, it was such a rush.
Unfortunately the first hole started with a three putt , definitely some nerves involved which carried on for a few more holes. At times it was easy to settle in and feel like it was any other tournament. But then you would be faced with a large leaderboard or Annika’s group including the entourage would be on an adjacent hole and you were quickly reminded where you were.

One of my favourite places on the course is the VIP area providing great views of both 9 and 18 greens where you can also enjoy your favourite beverages and snacks. I learned that my player badge will get me and my guests absolutely anywhere on the property and anything we want to eat or drink!

I didn’t play as well as I would have liked but the experience is amazing and I am thankful to have the opportunity to do it again tomorrow!

WATCH | Fredborg & Barron at the CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open

It may have been delayed 90 minutes this morning, but after the fog lifted some of the world’s best up and coming golfers opened the 2023 CentrePort Canada Rail Park Manitoba Open at Southwood Golf & Country Club.
Three Manitobans, Travis Fredborg (Pine Ridge Golf Club), Braxton Kuntz (Breezy Bend Country Club) and Ryan McMillan (Elmhurst Golf & Country Club) along with Winnipeg Jets forward Morgan Barron, are in this year’s field.
Fredborg made consecutive birdies on the 3rd, 4th and 5th holes on his way to a 2-under par 70.
Kuntz completed his opening round Friday morning playing the final three holes. He shot a 1-under par 71.
McMillan, in his first professional event, carded a 5-over par 77 while Barron had an 8-over par 80.

Deraney wins, Jones top Manitoban, at the 2023 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship

The Algonquin Golf Course continued to test some of the best Mid-Amateur golfers for the fourth consecutive day, but nothing could stop Joseph Deraney as he rose to the challenge and finished at 10-under to capture the 2023 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur title on Friday, presented by BDO.
Starting his day tied for first, Deraney of Belden, Miss., got off to a hot start by making a birdie on the par-4 first hole. From there the 40-year-old never looked back, recording a total of six birdies for the day, shooting a final round 4-under 68.
“It’s so hard to win, it’s nice to be able to fall back on your experiences a couple times but its just always difficult to win. Getting out there today I hit a great first shot on the first hole to about two feet and got off to a quick start by making a birdie. I steadied the ship and made a solid 15-footer on four for birdie, then really just had a lot of good quality golf shots. I got another birdie on nine, about a five-footer and so I was able to just grab a lead, there were some struggles on six and seven for some of the other guys, so I knew I was able to grab a two-shot lead. I played really solid on the back, three par fives and I thought with that I’d be able to hoist the trophy. I made a really solid birdie on 13, I three putted eleven, but I made a great par on ten which is by far the hardest hole out here. I didn’t look at too many of the leaderboards, but I felt like some of the guys were creeping back up on me, so I got a little fire under me and hit a couple more really good golf shots, then looked back and saw I had a four-shot lead, so I cruised on in,” said Deraney.
Deraney won by three strokes over Ryan Terry who also shot a final round 4-under 68 to place second. This is Deraney’s third time winning the Men’s Mid-Am with having captured the title in 2018 and 2019.
Drew Jones (Shilo Country Club) finished as Manitoba’s top player, 43rd on the leaderboard, carding a final round 75.
Adam Guenther (Elmhurst Golf & Country Club) had the low of the day shooting a 1-over par 73.
Curtis Markusson (St. Charles Country Club) was the lone Manitoban to make the cut in the Mid-Masters Championship finishing 12th on the leaderboard.

In addition to the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur title, Deraney has received an exemption into the 2023 U.S. Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship and the 2024 Men’s Amateur Championship.
Derek Meinhart of Mattoon, Ill., came into the final round tied for first and finished with an even par- 72 to place third overall. Meinhart got off to a tough start with a bogey on the par-4 sixth hole and a double bogey on the par-4 seventh hole. He didn’t let that stop him though, as he pushed through and carded a total of four birdies to finish 6-under for the championship.
Canadians Mike Landry of Fredericton N.B., and Derek Dalziel of London, Ont., finished tied for fourth at 5-under.
Deraney also won the Mid-Master division with Meinhart placing second. Rob Couture of Celina, Tex., placed third in the Mid-Master after shooting a final round 1-under 71, finishing 4-under for the championship.
