NEWS | Extend your season! Golf Canada launches off-course strategy
There is no such thing as an off-season in golf. Discover golf: anytime, anywhere.
OAKVILLE, Ont. – As temperatures drop and the outdoor golf season in most parts of the country draws to a close, Golf Canada is proud to announce the launch of a new comprehensive off-course golf strategy supported by the Just Swing campaign, which highlights the benefits and different forms of off-course golf.
Golf Canada endorses and supports all forms of golf and is encouraging Canadians to experience the game year-round through off-course golf experiences.
These experiences include golf simulators, driving ranges, short game areas, mini golf, virtual reality golf and golf-themed video games that all provide opportunities to engage with the sport year-round. Complementing traditional green grass golf, off-course golf provides a continuity of golf experiences that can welcome new individuals into the sport in ways that best fit their lifestyle.
For Golf Canada’s Chief Marketing Officer Tim McLaughlin, the campaign is about having a presence wherever and however golf is being enjoyed.
“There has been an explosion in off-course golf options in our country, most notably golf simulators, and Golf Canada is excited to officially launch our off-course strategy. This initiative is reflective of the reality that an increasing number of Canadians are now participating in golf activity year-round in non-traditional venues like simulator facilities. Off-course golf has the potential to be transformational for our sport, combining fun and realistic golf experiences with affordable options that are accessible 12 months a year,” said McLaughlin. “This strategy acknowledges the way that Canadians are engaging with the game is evolving, and our intention is to create a greater connection between these new off-course formats and the broader golf landscape.”
As part of this strategy, Golf Canada, in partnership with the Provincial Golf Associations, is proud to launch a new facility membership offering, specifically designed for off-course operators. Through this program off-course facilities will now be able to become official members of Golf Canada and have the ability to promote their operations to Canada’s largest and most engaged golf audience.
It will also be easier for Canadians to find places to play off course. A comprehensive digital program promoting off-course golf will connect Canadians to Official Member Facilities of Golf Canada. Golfers will soon be able to log and track their off-course activity at simulators in the Golf Canada app beginning in early December. For more information or to download Canada’s number one golf app, click here.
“It’s not just having a presence where golf is being played in the winter, it’s about building meaningful relationships with the off-course facilities and owners who are invested in this growth sector of the sport. These facilities are providing a fun and social environment for golf enthusiasts and newcomers looking to experience golf, and we feel we can deliver year-round value and benefit to their operations.”
Interest in off-course golf has grown substantially in Canada over the past four years. In 2021, 19 per cent of Canadians were using golf simulators; that number rose to 43 per cent in 2024, an increase of 24 per cent over four years. In addition to the countless green grass facilities that transform their operations to accommodate indoor golf each winter.
The Just Swing campaign will support Golf Canada’s complete off-course strategy to have a presence wherever golf is being played. The campaign encourages Canadians to discover golf, anywhere, anytime and Just Swing, highlighting the many benefits the game can provide. This campaign is designed to re-frame perceptions of the sport by driving understanding that whether you pick up a club on a golf course or a simulator its all golf. The hope is to position the sport in a new way, particularly for new audiences who aren’t currently active golfers.

It is a tremendous honor to be able to present the PGA of Manitoba Distinguished
Service award to Mr. Jim Collins. It makes it even more special that his son, Glenn
Collins, could be here with us today to accept this award. I know you have many friends in this room, and I know they are all thrilled you are here. Glenn is joined by Jim’s family and friends, including his wife Lucette who often played with Jim at St. Charles.
I would like to share with you a little bit about one of the greatest golf professionals in
the history of the PGA of Canada.
I am sure that everyone who grew up playing golf in Manitoba or who had aspirations
in the golf business knew Jim Collins. Some of you in this room worked for Jim in the
past or played with him. On thing for sure, all of us in one way or another have been
impacted by his contributions to our profession. Simply put, Jim is a legend in
Manitoba and Canadian Golf history.
Jim’s legacy revolves around him being the longest tenured golf professional in St.
Charles’ history. Jim was and always will be St. Charles. His name and his influence will
always be associated with the club. He began his long tenure working in the pro shop as
a junior golfer, and in the process, he became one of the top junior golfers in Manitoba.
He played and practiced with the legendary George Knudson. He held his own finishing
runner up to him twice in the MB Junior championship.
In 1959 Jim moved east and became the assistant professional at Oakdale in Toronto.
He won the Ontario assistants championship in his time there and then returned to St.
Charles in 1961 to become the clubs Head Professional. From there, he served 37 years
to his retirement in 1997. Jim dedicated himself to St. Charles in all aspects of the
profession. A remarkable player, a true leader at the club and a mentor to his staff.
A few highlights from Jims’s career as a golf professional are:
- 3-time PGA of Manitoba Zone Champion
- PGA of Canada Club Professional Champion in 1980
- 5 Time PGA of Manitoba Seniors Champion
- PGA of Canada seniors’ championship in 1990
- 2 Time PGA of Canada Club Professional of the Year
- Served the PGA of Manitoba Board for 9 years, twice as president and served
the national Board for two years. - A member of the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and the PGA of Canada Hall of
Fame. - Shot his age countless times!
When I had the fortune to become the assistant professional at St. Charles in 2001, I
very quickly learned of Jim’s importance to the club and its members. The members
often commented on Jim’s influence on the club as a professional and a person. They
clearly expressed how much they adored him. I had never experienced a situation where
the club professional was so revered by the membership. Five years after Jim retired the
membership still referred to him as “Mr. Collins” and that remained for many years after.
As I got to know Jim it did not take long to figure out why.
He was the truest of gentlemen. He had an amazing way to make people feel welcome
and valued. He had an unbridled passion for the game. He was a true golf professional.
He played the game well and practiced most every day (10 shots with every club he
told me). He was a model professional in how he handled his business. His interactions
with the members were attentive and genuine. The members truly adored him.
Jim was mentor to many. His career as a whole was an important lesson for all golf
professionals. His tenure was no secret. He put the club first. He truly loved St. Charles
and shared that passion with the members. His decision making was always with St.
Charles and the club at the forefront of his mind. As a result, he was adored by the
membership and had a tenure of 37 years. His legacy remains in many areas of the club.
Of the many, Jim founded the St. Charles Invitational Pro Am and the trophy still bears
his name. It is the longest running community fundraising event in the history of Cancer
Care Manitoba. This event has reached $2.65 million dollars in donations in support of
Cancer Care in Manitoba and has no signs of slowing down. An astonishing impact on
the Manitoba community.
Jim was also a pros pro. Underneath is gentlemanly demeanor he was sneaky funny.
He knew when to make levity of a situation and clearly understood how the challenges
of being a club professional created humor opportunities for humor.
As we all know, Jim passed away on September 10th, 2024. I spoke to him two weeks
prior and I believe he had just finished shooting his age…again. I was so glad I bumped
into him that day.
Jim was an outstanding member of the PGA of Manitoba, the PGA of Canada and the
Winnipeg Community. He certainly deserves this recognition. I am pleased to call up
Glenn Collins to accept the PGA of Manitoba Distinguished Service Award for his father,
Mr. Jim Collins.

FEATURE | Carol Martel honoured as 2025 Distinguished Service Award winner
(courtesy Michelle Lee)
Good evening everyone and congrats to all of our competitors, volunteers and staff on a successful 2025 season. My name is Michelle Lee and together with Susan Wright-Cassan we have been gifted the opportunity to present Golf Manitoba’s Distinguished Service Award.
This award was created in 2006 and first awarded in 2007 recognizing an individual who has gone above and beyond, who is a true advocate of all aspects of the sport of golf in Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. It is NOT simply based on year of service but rather exceptional service, dedication, and that special je ne sais quoi that that deserves the title of distinguished!
This evening we are just tickled pink to honor Carol as the newest member of the DSA family and are so pleased that she is able to be with us tonight and I will get back to that in a bit.
Carol and I go back so many years that we both had long, dark, undyed hair. One of our first meetings was as competitors at the Women’s City & District Championship. Carol fired into the Kingswood Golf & Country Club parking lot in her hot red sports car with her hair flying behind her in the wind and parked right next to me. She had somehow managed to squeeze her clubs into that tiny red sports car and as we were unpacking, she greeted me with that big warm smile of hers and introduced herself. Thanks to golf we created a long lasting connection.
Carol started volunteering initially for the Manitoba Ladies Golf association in 1997 and is still volunteering with Golf Manitoba 28 years strong. There is not any sign of her slowing down. That’s just not Carol’s MO.
Hopefully, some of you read Carol’s media release and her healthy resume. She certainly does check all the boxes for the ‘distinguished’ category.
I would like to speak to another facet that cannot be quantified in a checklist.
Carol is that type of special volunteer who can always put a smile on our faces even if it is something we don’t want to hear:
- like a ruling not in our favor,
- like a time violation warning,
- like an op-positional opinion in our boardroom.
She has taken on being a district rep, club rep, started & scorer, pace of play official, a board member and a rules official …with integrity, discipline, dedication, honesty & fairness …and a true and genuine love for our sport.
Carol is the type of volunteer that you have every confidence in her dependability, in her professional conduct, in her desire to provide the absolute best for Golf Manitoba in each and every volunteer role she has taken on….and yes, that includes the good old days when we worked the night shift Bingo’s.
Carol is the type of volunteer who offers her help before she is asked.
Carol, you have been an absolute pleasure to work with as a volunteer…and that comes from many more volunteers than just me.
Carol has been a one person recruitment team for our association. No wonder you have recruited so many volunteers – you make it sound like winning the lottery! Thanks for advocating for Golf Manitoba as both a volunteer and as a competitor.
Carol makes volunteering fun. She has a sparkle about her that is infectious. She has been a superb mentor to so many and is always happy to do so.
Always wanting to help, Carol helped with the
- launch of the initial Manitoba Golf in Schools program and went out to her neighborhood schools to promote and educate and obtain funding for the program.
- She was also right there to pitch in with the planning and the day for the ‘PINK OUT LOUD’ golf for the cure tournaments which saw almost 50 women all in various shades of pink ..golfing and raising money for cancer care Manitoba.
As a level 2 certified rules official, Carol demonstrates a kindness and fairness that helps us to realize that the rules officials are actually there to help us…not punish us.
Always there, always ready to ‘pitch in’, always with a positive and engaging attitude and ALWAYS ready to let out her trade mark “WOOP WOOP”!
Carol has driven that same hot red convertible right up to this year. But don’t worry, she simply replaced it with another red convertible and she still can fit her golf clubs in it and still let’s her ‘not as long and a bit more gray hair‘ fly in the wind!
So from your volunteer family, your fellow competitors and friends, all of Golf Manitoba…our warmest congratulations and gratitude.
Earlier I had mentioned ‘I’ll get back to that in a bit’ ..So here is that ‘bit’.
Carol has managed to be with us tonight while she is living through a very difficult time that is related to family illness. I just know that this entire room sends out to Carol their care & support. Tough to ‘woop woop’ right now so on behalf of Carol I would like to express her sentiments about being the 2025 recipient of the DSA award.
Firstly, Carol feels both honored and touched to have been chosen. Being part of Golf Manitoba for 28 years has been a wonderful journey that has created for her a second family. She thanks the past MLGA for her ‘start’ on this Journey and to Golf Manitoba and our sponsors for providing the opportunities to continue on with her learning, growing, and creating an even larger 2nd family.
Carol has always followed the motto of paying it forward and Golf Manitoba has provided her the opportunity to do just that. To the volunteer family – it has been a priceless gift to have had so many adventures, laughs and challenges together with all of you. For Carol, the experience of spending decades in creating this cherished circle of friends has been a joyous time and her hope, her wish, and her belief is that there will be much more of that to follow.
She is beyond pleased to accept this award and is both proud and humbled to be the 2025 recipient.
Thank you to Golf Manitoba, to her fellow volunteers and of course to her own family who has steadfastly supported her volunteer work.
Honoring a Community of Volunteers
In addition to the Martel, this year’s awards ceremony celebrated the dedication of twelve outstanding volunteers who have reached significant milestones in their service to Golf Manitoba. These individuals have been recognized for their continuous contributions of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25+ years of service.
5 year: David Kazina, Joan Todd
10 year: Rob Bell, Bob Peters, Bob Poole
15 year: Sandra Cross, Vince Mariani, Celeste Pryma, Lori Russell
20 year: Aija Culley, Gord Hudson
25 year: Florence Mehmel
