Golf fans in Manitoba have watched Braxton Kuntz (Breezy Bend Country Club) grow into one of Canada’s up and coming stars.
Today, at Lakes Golf & Country Club in Westerville, Ohio, Kuntz finished the 36 hole qualifier at 8-under par 136 (69-67), only to miss earning one of four spots to play in the U.S. Open by a single stroke.
In his opening round of the day, Kuntz played the front nine at 1-under par, then followed it up with two birdies and seven pars on the back nine for a 3-under par 69.
Kuntz resumed his day with pars on the opening two holes, only to suffer to then bogey the par-5 third. He bounced back with three consecutive birdies to go 2-under on the front. A birdie on 10, pars on 11 and 12, a bogey on 13 and a par on the 14th set the stage for another dramatic run of three straight birds on holes 15 through 17. Kuntz’s day came to an end with a par on the final hole.
Kuntz has been designated by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as the second alternate should two of the four qualifiers be unable to participate in the U.S. Open.
